It is estimated that as many as 23 percent of long-term care residents develop bed sores and eight percent of all nursing home deaths are attributed to them. Bed sores — also called pressure sores, pressure ulcers or decubitus ulcers — are open sores that occur when oxygen deprivation causes an area of skin to die and be rubbed away. These sores most often occur at pressure points against a mattress, including the base of the spine and backs of the ankles. While completely preventable if the patient is routinely moved, bed sores can lead to infection, septicemia, gangrene and even death.
